About Up or Down? GOLD

Updated November 1, 2026

What it is

Up or Down? GOLD is a free web game for practicing chart reading on gold (XAU/USD). A real chart stops at a random moment, you decide whether the next move is up or down, and the market gives the answer. It runs in any modern browser, on a computer or a phone, and needs no account.

The site is not affiliated with any broker, exchange or financial company. It does not sell trading products or signals, and nothing on it is investment advice. The site is funded by advertising.

Why it exists

Classic chart-reading drills mostly offer daily charts of a currency pair or bitcoin. People who watch gold on intraday charts had nothing similar. This game fills that gap. It covers the 5-minute, 15-minute, 1-hour and 4-hour charts, uses ten years of real prices, and judges answers the way a trade would be judged.

Where the data comes from

The charts use spot gold prices from October 2, 2016 to September 1, 2026, assembled from three public sources:

One-minute prices were converted to UTC, joined into a single series, and combined into 5-minute candles. The 15-minute, 1-hour and 4-hour candles were built from those. The 4-hour candles follow the common market convention of a day that ends at 17:00 New York time. Where two sources overlap, their prices typically differ by $0.14–0.36. Spreads are not included, and weekends and market holidays appear as gaps.

The statistics in the Learn articles are calculated from this same dataset.

How it is built

The game is a static web app. Charts are drawn with TradingView Lightweight Charts (Apache-2.0). Your results and settings are stored in your own browser and are never sent to a server. After your first visit, the game also works offline.
